In May 2020, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced its plan to build a $12 billion foundry in Arizona using 5-nano meters technologies, to serve the world’s dire need for cutting-edge chips as a result of the emergence of AI and 5G technologies. Not only did the news send a shockwave through the world immediately, but it also drew the strategic bond between Taiwan and Arizona to our attention again. In March 2021, Intel also said it would shovel $20 billion into two new semiconductor plants in Arizona. The world’s two-chip giants’ great minds think alike, highlighting the competitive edges Arizona possesses. In fact, Taiwan and Arizona have been deeply connected.
